BJANZ members "Nishita and Dhanajay" perform a charming folk dance from Mithila at the Indian Independence Day celebrations.
This evening, members of the Indian community gathered at the newly inaugurated Consulate General of India, now located at its permanent chancery premises on Level 14, SAP Tower, 151 Queen Street, Auckland. This special evening marked a significant milestone — commemorating 11 transformative years under the dynamic and decisive leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
The event was a powerful reflection on India's growth journey — from economic strides towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2029 to groundbreaking reforms and developmental milestones shaping the nation’s bright future in Amrit Kaal.
“An inspiring and enriching evening spent at the Consulate General of India’s office, celebrating 11 glorious years of visionary leadership under our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and his committed team. The event was a powerful showcase of India’s remarkable progress and bold vision for Amrit Kaal — the journey toward a shining centenary of our nation’s independence. The atmosphere was filled with pride and purpose as we absorbed insights into India’s transformative milestones. I also had the privilege of connecting with esteemed leaders of the Indian diaspora and was truly honoured to meet the respected Consul General, Dr. Madam Mohan Sethi ji and Consul & HOC, Mr. Sanjeev Kumar ji. A memorable evening that left us feeling proud, hopeful, and deeply connected to our roots.”
- Shri Amit Shankar Verma, President of BJANZ

BJANZ at Shakambari Bonalu 2025 – A Celebration of Devotion, Nature & Community.
Members of the Bihar Jharkhand Association of New Zealand (BJANZ) were honored to take part in the Shakambari Bonalu Festival held on 20 July 2025 at Auckland Sri Ganesh Temple, Papakura. The event was beautifully hosted by the Telangana community in New Zealand, and brought together devotees from across the Indian diaspora.
Shakambari Bonalu is a deeply symbolic and sacred festival dedicated to Goddess Shakambari, a compassionate form of Goddess Durga or Parvati, who is believed to have nourished humanity by producing food through her divine grace during a time of severe famine.
One of the unique highlights of this festival is the Alangaram of the Goddess with fresh vegetables, fruits, and greens, symbolizing abundance, fertility, and gratitude to nature. Devotees offer "Bonam" – a traditional offering prepared with rice, jaggery, curd, and other items – in decorated pots placed on their heads, accompanied by vibrant music, devotional chants, and a joyful procession.
The event also included:
This festival is especially popular in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and its celebration in New Zealand is a testament to how our communities continue to uphold and cherish our spiritual roots, no matter where we are in the world.
BJANZ expresses heartfelt gratitude to the Telangana community for organizing such a meaningful and inclusive event and for giving us the opportunity to take part in this powerful expression of devotion and culture.
Let us continue supporting and celebrating our diverse Indian traditions across Aotearoa.
